Server Message Block

(also SMB)

Server Message Block definition

Server Message Block (SMB) is a network protocol that enables users to communicate with remote computers and servers — to use their resources or share, open, and edit files.

Server message block example

An office printer is connected to the receptionist’s computer. If another office worker wants to print something, their computer sends the receptionist’s computer a request to print it using the SMB protocol.
