Customer edge router

(also CE router, customer premises equipment, CPE device)

Customer edge router definition

A customer edge router is a router on the customer’s premises that directly interacts with the provider’s edge (PE) router. Edge routers let internal networks connect to external networks — for example, bridging the user’s LAN to their internet service provider’s network.

Real customer edge router examples

Corporations use customer edge routers as secure gateways between their corporate LAN and the wider internet.
