Consumer electronics definition

Consumer electronics is a broad term referring to any type of electronics intended for purchase and use by customers in their daily lives, both personal and professional. Consumer electronics can serve many functions: providing entertainment, facilitating communication, and simplifying various tasks.

In the past, the term “consumer electronics” referred to electronics used by customers in their homes. Today, it also incorporates devices that can be carried and used for business purposes, for example, laptops and smartphones.,

Types and uses of consumer electronics

The first popular consumer electronics were radio receivers, calculators, and later, televisions and pocket game consoles. Today, the list of most common CE devices includes:

  • Personal computers and laptops
  • Smartphones and tablets
  • Digital cameras
  • Printers and scanners
  • Video game consoles
  • Refrigerators, washing machines, and other types of household appliances

Consumer electronics are evolving as technology (e.g., integrated circuits) becomes smaller and more complex. The refrigerator is a prime example of this process – modern and advanced refrigerators not only keep food in cool conditions but can also connect to the internet, store recipes, or run apps.
