How to find your Xbox One IP address
Your Xbox One has an IP address, and you may need to access it when troubleshooting voice chat errors or streaming from the Microsoft gaming console to another device. In this article we’ll show you how to find your Xbox One IP address through its IP settings and how to set it up with a static IP address.
What is an IP address?
An IP address is a short numerical tag that identifies your device on a network, and your network on the larger internet. There are two kinds of IP addresses: private and public. Your Xbox One has a private IP address.
Public IP addresses are associated with a specific internet gateway — in most cases, the router you use to connect your device to the internet. It needs to pass the right data on from servers and websites to your device, and it does this by knowing the private IP address of each device connected to it. Check out our IP address lookup page to find out what your public IP address is.
Private IPs are used by your router’s internal IP address system. Your Xbox has a dynamic IP, which means that it will change from time to time (as opposed to a static IP address, which remains the same until the address is specifically reset).
If you want to find your Xbox One’s IP address, what you’re specifically looking for is the private IP assigned to it by your router. With a few simple steps, you can find it in your console’s IP settings. Of course, it’s buried in advanced settings, but we’ll show you how to navigate to that.
How to find your Xbox One IP address: step by step
You can find your Xbox IP address through the IP settings on the console.
- Switch on your Xbox One console.
- On the Xbox controller, press the “Menu” button to open the console’s menu interface.
- From the menu, select “Settings” > “Network” > “Network settings” > “Advanced settings.”
- Open “IP settings” to see your Xbox One’s IP address.
Remember, this is just the current IP address. Unless you set up a static IP address, it is likely to change over time.
How to set a static IP address for your Xbox One
You can set up a static IP address through the IP settings on your Xbox One with the following steps.
- Switch on your Xbox One console.
- On the Xbox controller, press the “Menu” button to open the console’s menu interface.
- From the menu, select “Settings” > “Network” > “Network settings” > “Advanced settings.”
- On this page, take note of the following information: “IP address,” “Subnet mask,” “Gateway,” “Primary DNS address,” and “Secondary DNS address.”
- Return to “Network settings” and select “Manual.”
- Input the IP address you wish to be static.
- Input the information from step 4 in the fields marked “Subnet mask,” “Gateway,” “Primary DNS address,” and “Secondary DNS address.”
- Return to “Advanced settings” and select “Save.”
To make sure that your Xbox still has good connectivity after changing to a static IP address, you can test your network connection with three steps.
- Switch on your console and press the Xbox home button.
- Select “Profile & system” > “Settings” > “General” > “Network settings.”
- Select “Test network connection.”
To further improve your gaming experience, you might want to change your DNS server. Check out our guide on how to change DNS on Xbox to learn more.
If you followed the steps above, your Xbox One now has a fixed IP address, and this may yield a number of benefits.
Benefits of a static IP address for Xbox One
Setting a static IP address on your Xbox One can be useful at times, though usually you won’t need to do this.
Having a static IP on any device on your network means that you’ll always know what the address is, and won’t need to look it up every time you need it. Static IPs also allow for port forwarding, which can boost your speeds by a very small amount.
Port forwarding involves configuring your router to always send certain data to specific devices on its network, and a static IP can help with this. However, this can expose you to security risks and we do not recommend port forwarding. Keeping your Xbox One secure is always a priority.
Secure your Xbox One with a VPN
Using a VPN for Xbox security is a smart and efficient way to protect your favorite console, without compromising on internet speed.
VPNs, or virtual private networks, encrypt your data and route it through VPN servers, hiding your internet protocol ID from outside observers. This lowers the risks of DDoS attacks and doxxing, methods of harassment that often involve people viewing your IP.
NordVPN, the world’s fastest VPN service, allows you to protect your online identity while still enjoying great speeds and stability. Though you can’t install a VPN on your Xbox, you can configure your router to use NordVPN. As a result, all devices connected to the network (including your Xbox One) will be secured.
If you’re worried about VPN speeds, you can test network connection and speed by opening the “Test network speed and statistics” page on the Xbox menu. This can be found in “Network settings.” Thanks to NordVPN’s NordLynx protocol, you won’t notice a significant difference in speeds.
