Why would you want to delete your Uber account?
While Uber is a handy tool for quickly getting from A to B, the app also causes some privacy concerns regarding the users’ data. The service asks you to provide your private data (such as your full name, phone number, and picture), stores information about your routes, and collects your payment information. In addition, Uber shares some of your data with third parties for advertising and internal use, making you susceptible to targeted ads.
When it comes to cybersecurity, Uber’s track record isn’t the best either. Throughout its existence, the company has had to pay settlements or publicly apologize for trying to cover data breaches, misusing their customer data, and violating data privacy and security laws. Since 2016, Uber has also suffered data breaches, with the latest attacks happening in 2022 and 2023. While the 2016 and 2022 breaches compromised Uber clients’ data directly from its servers, the 2023 attack focused on a third-party entity – Uber’s law firm.
Although Uber claims to have learned from its past mistakes and strongly emphasizes the importance of data privacy, it is understandable that some of the users may want to delete their accounts or switch to the competitors. So if you’ve made up your mind about deleting your Uber account, here’s how you can do it.
How to delete an Uber account
You can get rid of your Uber account in at least two ways: You can do so while using a mobile app or delete your Uber account online via desktop. In both cases, Uber will send you a verification code to confirm the deletion of your Uber account. You can find the steps for deleting the Uber account online or via mobile below.
Delete your Uber account in the Uber app
To delete your Uber account on mobile, you must do so via your app. Once you’re there:
- 1.
Tap the “Account” section in the bottom right corner.
- 2.
Tap on “Settings,” then “Privacy.”
- 3.
Scroll down and tap on “Account deletion.”
- 4.
Accept the identity verification prompt and type in your email or mobile phone number. Once done, tap “Next.”
- 5.
The Uber app will send a verification code to your email address or mobile number. Copy it to the Uber app and finish the deletion process.
After deleting your account, Uber will deactivate it, and after 30 days, it will be permanently deleted. You can still recover your Uber account if you sign in within 30 days of deactivation.
Delete the Uber account on the desktop
To delete your Uber account on the desktop, you’ll need to access Uber’s account deletion page. Once you’re there, follow these steps:
- 1.
Select the account you want to delete and click “Continue” (If you have only one account, proceed without choosing).
- 2.
Signify the reason why you want to delete your Uber account.
- 3.
Click “Delete account.”
If neither of the two solutions works and you cannot delete your account, contact Uber customer service for further steps and additional support.
What to consider before deleting your Uber account
After deleting your Uber account, you still have 30 days to recover it. After this period, Uber permanently deletes your account with all earned points and bonuses. You will also lose your Uber Eats and Uber driver accounts (if linked to the same account you deleted). Before deleting your account, complete all pending rides and payments – otherwise, you won’t be able to delete your account.
