What is VPN hardware?
VPN hardware refers to dedicated devices that are specifically designed to build a secure and encrypted VPN connection. It is commonly divided into computing hardware, such as the VPN server and the client device, as well as networking hardware, such as routers, firewalls, network cards, and wireless devices.
VPN hardware can be used to provide secure remote access to a company's resources for employees working from home, establish site-to-site connections between different locations, or connect the organization's network to cloud services, such as Amazon Web Services.
The main difference between VPN hardware and VPN software is where the VPN runs. VPN hardware uses a physical device to manage connections for users or entire networks, while VPN software runs on a computer, phone, server, or virtual machine.
How does VPN hardware work?
VPN hardware is a device placed at the edge of your network, between the internal LAN and the internet. It acts as a secure gateway that builds encrypted tunnels for remote users and site-to-site links.
When a remote user connects, their VPN app reaches the device’s public address and starts a secure handshake. The hardware authenticates the user via a password, token, certificate, or single sign-on. If the check passes, the device creates an encrypted tunnel and assigns the user an internal VPN IP address.
After that, all user traffic is wrapped in encryption and sent to the VPN hardware, which decrypts it and forwards it to internal resources.
What are the types of VPN hardware?
VPN hardware comes in several forms, each designed for a different network size or use case:
- VPN routers. These routers have built-in VPN servers and client software that allow remote devices to connect to the network securely. Some also provide firewall protection, intrusion prevention, and content filtering.
- VPN gateways. These are dedicated devices designed to manage VPN connections for an entire network. They typically have multiple VPN tunnels and can handle a large number of simultaneous connections.
- VPN concentrators. They are designed to manage large numbers of VPN connections from remote devices.
- VPN firewall appliances. All-in-one security appliances, such as Unified Threat Management (UTM) devices and next-generation firewalls (NGFW), combine firewall, intrusion prevention, and built-in VPN capabilities in a single device.
- Single-board computers. Devices like Raspberry Pi can be configured with software like WireGuard to act as a hardware VPN server.
