NordVPN’s Threat Protection: The technology behind Saily’s ad blocker

NordVPN’s Threat Protection applies DNS filtering to block ads and malicious domains. This way, you can enjoy distraction-free browsing and know you won’t stumble onto a malicious website by accident. But what does Saily have to do with it?

The Saily app has recently introduced its ad blocker — a feature powered by NordVPN’s Threat Protection. Saily users can now browse with ease and enhanced security. The best part? The new feature saves mobile data by blocking ads, so you only get the content you want — without your data running out from ad-heavy browsing. Enable the ad blocker in your Saily app and let your mobile data plan last longer!

How to enable Saily’s ad blocker

Saily makes ad blocking and mobile data saving super easy — three taps on your device screen, and your ad blocker is on!

  • Go to “eSIMs” on your Saily app.
  • Under “Security,” you’ll see “Ad blocker” — tap on it.Threat Protection-powered ad blocker

How do ads eat up your data?

When you visit a website or open an app, your browser requests ads as part of the page load. These ads often include images, videos, scripts, and other media files, all of which must be downloaded from ad servers to your device.

Depending on their size, ads — especially high-definition, auto-play videos — can consume a lot of mobile data. In fact, a single video ad can use more data than the entire webpage you’re viewing.

Moreover, most websites and apps load multiple ads at once, each pulling data from different servers. Many of these ads also come with tracking scripts which use additional data to send information back to ad networks. All of this adds up, leaving your mobile data running low faster than you’d expect. Here’s where Saily’s ad blocker can help.

How much data do you save with Saily’s ad blocker?

Our test results show that with the Threat Protection-powered ad blocker enabled, in some cases you can save up to 21% of your mobile data when browsing on your mobile phone, and around 13% while browsing on your computer. This is good news for both Saily users and NordVPN mobile app users who can also enjoy the same amounts of data saved.

The test and its results

In our test, we measured how much mobile data the Threat Protection-powered ad blocker can save. We had a set number of visits to 25 popular websites — spanning news, tech, online marketplaces, and entertainment — both with and without the ad blocker enabled. These sites varied widely in the amount of ads they displayed.

To keep the test as close to a real user experience as possible, we used a mobile version of Chrome with a screen resolution corresponding to an iPhone 14 Pro for mobile testing and Chrome for PC browsing.

News and media websites

Our test showed that Saily’s ad blocker produces the biggest data savings when you browse news and media websites. On some of these websites, our ad blocker reduces your mobile data consumption by half. Online news and media outlets are typically full of ads so it’s not surprising we got the best data-saving results on these websites.

Online marketplaces and entertainment websites

We also found that Saily’s ad blocker saved some mobile data on certain online marketplaces and entertainment websites. If you’re frequently using websites to book overnight stays during your trip abroad, you’ll be glad to know that Saily’s ad blocker will help you save some of your mobile data.

Tech and internet services websites

If you like to shop online, especially on your laptop, you’ll be pleased to hear that, according to our test, Threat Protection reduces your mobile data usage by about a third when you browse certain online shops. We also have good news for gaming fans — you can watch your favorite streams knowing your mobile data plan will last a little longer.

And if you can’t last a day without watching or commenting on your favorite content, you can still do that during vacation with Saily and even enjoy a modest decrease in mobile data usage with its ad blocker on messaging and video-sharing websites.

So why not make your Saily data plan last longer on your next vacation? Turn the ad blocker on and browse with confidence, knowing you’re using those precious megabytes on the content you really want to see.
