Cloud application portability

Cloud application portability definition

Cloud application portability is the ability to move apps, data, and workloads between different cloud platforms easily. Businesses may need to transfer this information to different platforms for a number of reasons — from changing providers to adapting to new business requirements.

Cloud portability gives businesses the freedom to switch providers or adjust their cloud setup without hassle. To achieve cloud portability, businesses use standard tools, APIs, and frameworks that are compatible across different clouds.

Cloud portability vs. cloud interoperability

  • Cloud portability allows businesses to move applications and data easily between different cloud platforms. It provides flexibility, enabling companies to switch providers or adjust their cloud setup without much hassle.
  • Cloud interoperability, on the other hand, is about making different cloud platforms work together seamlessly. It allows data and processes to flow across multiple clouds without hiccups. For this to happen, the systems need to use compatible standards and protocols, ensuring everything communicates well.

Why companies want cloud portability

  • Maintaining flexibility. Cloud portability allows businesses to quickly adapt to market changes and take advantage of opportunities like better pricing or discounts from competing cloud providers.
  • Mitigating risk. Without portability, businesses are tied to a single vendor, which isn’t great if their prices rise or services change. Cloud portability gives companies the freedom to move their business elsewhere.
  • Increasing leverage. Being able to switch clouds gives companies leverage when negotiating contracts with their cloud provider — even if they don’t plan to change.
  • Fostering innovation. Cloud portability makes it easier to try out new cloud products and services, helping businesses stay ahead by testing options that could benefit them.
