NordVPN expands scam protection with Message Protection

Scam texts have become one of the most common ways cybercriminals target people online. A message pretending to be from your bank, a delivery company, a government institution, or even a family member can appear legitimate enough to trick you into clicking a malicious link or sharing sensitive information. To help users stay safer from phishing, smishing, and spam campaigns, NordVPN is adding Message Protection to its Call and Message Protection feature. Read on to learn more about the feature.

Avoid spam texts with NordVPN’s Message Protection

What is NordVPN’s Message Protection?

Message Protection is a NordVPN mobile app feature that alerts you when an incoming text message is suspected to be a scam. It can help you avoid phishing, fraud, and malicious links by warning you about potential risks before you interact with the message.

When enabled, the Message Protection feature scans incoming SMS messages from unknown senders for suspicious indicators, like known malicious links, scam-related keywords, or phone numbers associated with fraud, and alerts the user if any of these signs are found.

Alongside scam call protection, which warns users about potentially fraudulent incoming calls, Message Protection is part of NordVPN’s Call and Message protection toolkit for Android users. The feature works directly through the NordVPN Android app, so users can enable it without installing any additional apps or tools.

How NordVPN’s Message Protection works

Message Protection helps users recognize spam, scams, and phishing attacks in text messages by looking for patterns cybercriminals commonly use. The feature works directly through the NordVPN Android app.

  1. 1.You receive a text message. When an SMS message from an unknown sender arrives on your Android device, the Message Protection feature automatically checks it for potential scam indicators before you interact with it. Messages from contacts saved on your device are not scanned.
  2. 2.Message Protection looks for suspicious signs. The feature scans incoming messages for known malicious links, scam-related keywords, phone numbers associated with fraud, phishing language patterns, and behavioral signals often used in social engineering attacks.
  3. 3.You get an instant warning. If Message Protection detects any of these signs, it immediately alerts you about the potential risk. The message is not automatically deleted or blocked. It’s up to you to decide whether to ignore the message, delete it, or block the sender.

It’s important to mention that Message Protection only analyzes suspicious patterns used in scams, and does not store your message content. The feature focuses on identifying potential threats while keeping users’ conversations private.

What are the benefits of Message Protection?

Message Protection adds an extra layer to your Android security and helps block phishing texts, scam links, and spam messages. The Message Protection feature:

  • Provides real-time scam alerts. Instead of manually analyzing every unfamiliar text, you receive instant warnings about potentially dangerous messages.
  • Reduces phishing risk. By flagging suspicious links and scam patterns before you interact with them, Message Protection can help reduce the risk of phishing attacks and account compromise.
  • Works automatically. Once enabled, Message Protection continuously checks incoming SMS messages and warns users if the message contains any scam indicators. You can continue using your phone normally without manually checking every message yourself.
  • Doesn’t require an active VPN connection. The feature works even if you are not actively connected to a VPN server.
  • Doesn’t require additional costs. Message Protection is included with your NordVPN premium subscription.

How to enable Message Protection on Android

Setting up Message Protection takes only a few steps:

  1. 1.Install the NordVPN app. Download and install the latest version of the NordVPN app on your Android device.
  2. 2.Open the products menu. Launch the app and open the products screen.
  3. 3.Enable Message Protection. Select “Message Protection,” turn the feature on, and follow the setup instructions.

The app may request SMS-related permissions required for real-time protection functionality on Android devices, so make sure to enable those.

Why are scam texts dangerous?

Text message scams, also known as smishing, have become so common because they’re cheap, fast, and easy for criminals to scale. A single scam campaign can target millions of phone numbers in minutes.

Unlike phishing emails that may end up in spam folders, SMS messages usually appear directly on a user’s lock screen, which makes them feel more urgent and trustworthy.

According to the Federal Trade Commission,¹ consumers reported losing $470 million to scams that started with text messages in 2024 — five times the amount reported in 2020. Cybercriminals often impersonate banks, delivery companies, government institutions, streaming services, and mobile carriers to pressure users into acting quickly before they notice warning signs.

A single scam message can lead to:

  • Phishing attacks. Some scam texts redirect victims to fake websites that imitate banks, streaming services, delivery companies, or social media platforms. If you enter your credentials, attackers may gain access to your accounts.
  • Malware infections. Malicious links in SMS messages can also download malware onto your device. Depending on the malware, attackers may attempt to steal passwords, monitor activity, access messages, or compromise sensitive information.
  • Account takeover attempts. Once criminals obtain your credentials, they may try to access other accounts connected to your email address or phone number. In some cases, attackers use stolen information for identity theft or financial fraud.

These scams also keep getting harder to spot. Scammers now use AI tools to write more realistic phishing texts with natural language and fewer obvious mistakes. Even experienced users can fall for them when distracted, tired, or quickly checking notifications.
