How to save money on hotels with PriceMice: Same room, different country, lower price

The price you see for a hotel room online might not always be identical for everyone else. Travel sites can sometimes show different fees for the same room depending on the country you browse from. Luckily, you don’t have to worry about it anymore because of PriceMice. PriceMice is a free browser extension that searches for the same hotel room at a lower price by checking rates in other countries, then shows you how to book it. Here's everything you need to know before your next booking.

How to Save Money on Hotels with PriceMice

What is PriceMice?

PriceMice is a free browser extension opens in a new tab that helps travelers find the cheapest price of a hotel room by comparing it across different countries. When you click the extension's button, PriceMice checks the booking price (same booking, same dates) across different locations and highlights the cheapest option, along with how much you could save. Once that’s done, just connect to the VPN server of the country that offers the best deal and finish your reservation!

PriceMice is the latest creation from the minds behind NordVPN that aims to provide users more freedom when booking their holidays online. It’s completely free to use!

Why the same hotel room costs different prices in different countries

The reason the same hotel may cost different across various countries is geo-based pricing. Online travel agencies and booking platforms often adjust prices based on the visitor's location, which is a strategy driven by currency differences, local demand, and regional pricing policies. For example, a hotel in Rome could cost less for a visitor browsing from one country than from another due to differences in local demand.

Based on that, the identical room for the same dates and the same guests can cost noticeably less when priced for another country. NordVPN's research on price differences shows just how wide these gaps can get not only for hotels, but also for flights, car rentals, and subscriptions.

Better yet, you can learn how to get cheap flights with a VPN without much hassle. Simply connecting to a different country’s VPN server can save you money on flights, rooms, or even transport rental. The problem is that looking for the right VPN country server can get tedious — you'd have to switch locations, re-run the same search, convert currencies, and compare taxes and fees across tabs for every room you're considering. That's exactly the work PriceMice does for you!

How does PriceMice work?

The PriceMice extension works in three simple steps. You just install the free browser extension on any Chromium-based browser (for example, Chrome, Edge, or Brave), sign in with your Nord Account, click the “Find better price”  button next to a booking you like, look for a better price, and connect to a suggested VPN server to finish your purchase.

1. Enable the extension and browse normally

Once you’ve got the extension from your browser’s web store, search for hotels on a supported travel site just like you always do. When PriceMice is active, it’ll add a small “Find better price” button next to each room. No extra tabs, no separate searches — the option will appear right where you're already looking.

2. Click to compare

Click the “Find better price” button for PriceMice to check the room — identical dates, same guests — as priced in a set of other countries. The extension will then compare final prices that users will have to pay at checkout, and find the cheapest option. Within seconds, a popup will show you if and where it's cheaper and how much you'd save, with all taxes and fees included (if they are provided by the booking platform on the listing page), broken down per night and per stay.

Keep in mind, though, that prices are AI-matched and mistakes can happen. Furthermore, the extension finds deals based solely on the location. The price may change over time or be affected by other factors, including but not limited to price change by the lister or the booking selling out.

3. Book the deal

Once you find the best deal, connect to that country with NordVPN on desktop (here's how to change location on Google Chrome) or with a Saily eSIM on mobile (using Saily’s virtual locations feature). Then book the room at the cheaper rate as if you were browsing from there. Remember, the extension finds deals based solely on location.

  • Value-conscious travelers. People who are serious about their travel budget and want to stretch it even further.
  • Deal-seekers. Travelers who love finding the best hotel deals without spending hours on manual research.
  • International travelers. Individuals who like to plan trips abroad and are looking to save some money on accommodation.

Whether you're planning months ahead or hunting for last-minute hotel deals, the logic is the same — to check what the room costs elsewhere before you pay.

What does PriceMice get you?

As a simple free browser extension, PriceMice gets you a ton of benefits, including:

  • Real savings on the same room. PriceMice helps you look for lower prices for the exact room, dates, and guest count. Savings can be substantial, though deals aren’t guaranteed — listings might sell out and pricing might change due to circumstances like listing owners changing the price or the booking selling out.
  • Transparent, all-in prices. Every result includes taxes and fees (if the booking platform provides them for the listing) shown per night and per stay. What you see is what you'd pay.
  • Effortless comparison. One click gives you the results in seconds, without any prior configuration or setup.
  • Completely free. The extension requires no subscription and has no hidden costs.
  • Trustworthy and private. PriceMice is a product from the makers of NordVPN and does not ask for your personal data, keeping analytics opt-in only.

Is PriceMice safe and private?

PriceMice is built by the creators of NordVPN, a company that has made digital privacy its core mission for over a decade, so you know it's designed with your online privacy in mind. The extension requires only an email to sign up, and collects analytics only if you explicitly opt in.

And if you use NordVPN to book the lower rate PriceMice finds, you get a bonus layer of protection while you're online. A VPN encrypts the traffic between your device and the VPN server, adding protection when you're using public Wi-Fi.
