Responsible person record

RP record definition 

RP, or responsible person, record refers to a DNS record type that provides contact information for the domain owner. This information is primarily used for administrative purposes however RP record is rarely used because of privacy concerns and the tools that already exist, such as WHOIS. 

RP record benefits

As an informational type DNS record, RP record stores administrative contact details, such as an email address and an optional text description. This way, the domain owner can easily contact whoever is responsible for domain maintenance. 

Other types of DNS records:

DNS records such as, RP record, are designed to give additional information. Here are some other DNS record types: 

  • LOC record. An informational DNS record that specifies the geographical location of a domain or server. 
  • CERT record. A security-focused DNS record used to store certificates or public keys for authentication purposes, such as TLS or S/MIME.
  • MX Record. Specifies the mail server responsible for receiving emails on behalf of a domain. Unlike RP records, MX records directly contribute to email functionality.
  • SOA Record: Provides authoritative information about the domain, including contact details and domain serial numbers. It differs from RP records as it includes broader administrative data.
