(also Class C IP)

Class C IP address definition

Class C IP addresses fall within the range of 192.0.0.0 to 223.255.255.255 in the IPv4 addressing scheme. Designed for smaller networks, they support up to 254 devices per network. The typical subnet mask for Class C addresses is 255.255.255.0, where the first three octets (e.g., 192.168.1) define the network portion of the address, and the final octet (ranging from 0 to 255) identifies individual devices within that network.

Additional features

  • Limited device support. Class C IP addresses are suitable for small networks because they support a maximum of 254 devices per network.
  • Default subnet mask. The default subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, which divides the address into network and host portions.
  • Address range. Class C IP addresses range from 192.0.0.0 to 223.255.255.255 in the IPv4 scheme.
  • Commonly used in. Typically used in small-to-medium-sized networks, such as local area networks (LANs).
  • Subnetting capabilities. Class C networks can be further subdivided using subnetting to create smaller sub-networks.
  • Network host number limitations. A Class C network can accommodate up to 254 hosts, with the first and last addresses reserved for the network and broadcast.
