Transaction monitoring: Quickly spot suspicious activity in your accounts
Fraud happens fast — your protection should be faster. With NordVPN, you get:
Monitoring of your linked bank and credit card accounts.
Instant email and app alerts when unusual activity is detected.
A privacy-focused, secure, read-only connection — NordVPN never gets access to your accounts.
Transaction monitoring currently only supports bank and credit card accounts at financial institutions in the United States.
The feature is currently available on Android, iOS, and Windows, with macOS coming soon.
What is transaction monitoring?
Transaction monitoring is a NordVPN feature that alerts you to suspicious or unusual activity in your linked bank and credit card accounts. It continuously checks each new transaction and compares it to your normal spending patterns. If something suspicious shows up on your account, NordVPN will notify you right away.
Large-scale financial institutions also use the term “transaction monitoring” to refer to their systems designed to detect money laundering and meet anti-money laundering (AML) regulations.
How does NordVPN’s transaction monitoring work?
Transaction monitoring uses open banking — the same secure framework that lets you share your financial information with budgeting and finance apps.
Connect your bank or credit card account
You authorize NordVPN to link to your bank or credit card account through a secure third-party provider, which acts as a bridge between NordVPN and your bank.
When you add an account, the connection is read only: NordVPN can receive your transaction details and spot suspicious behavior, but it can never move money, make payments, or access your login details.
Get alerts for suspicious activity
The transaction monitoring feature analyses your transactions from the last 12 months to build a baseline. It contains your typical spending amounts, how often you make payments, and the kinds of merchants you use.
Every new transaction is checked against that baseline. When something falls outside it, the system flags it and sends you an instant alert by email and in the NordVPN app.

- 2.
Click “Dark Web Monitor™” in the menu on the left-hand side.
- 3.
Select “Asset management” from the menu on the left.

- 8.
Once you see your bank accounts in the list of monitored assets, transaction monitoring is active.
What suspicious activity can transaction monitoring spot?
Transaction monitoring is built to catch threats that would normally fall under your radar. It can flag:
Unauthorized card charges
A payment you didn’t make shows up on your card? It might be a small “test” charge scammers use before attempting a bigger transaction.
Unexpected withdrawals
You’ll be alerted whenever a withdrawal is far larger than your usual amounts for a particular category.
Possible account takeover
A sudden burst of activity, rapid back-to-back transactions, or spending that simply doesn’t match your habits can point to someone else getting into your account.
Why you should use transaction monitoring
Already have scam and fraud alerts set up? Take your identity theft protection to another level with transaction monitoring:
Catch fraud early
Phishing scams, credit card skimmers, data leaks — digital threats are all around us. The earlier you know you’re targeted, the sooner you can limit or prevent financial losses.
Watch multiple accounts in one place
You can link several bank and credit card accounts and keep an eye on all of them from a single dashboard, instead of logging into each one separately.
Stronger protection
Transaction monitoring perfectly complements the Dark Web Monitor Pro™ alerts — one warns you if your credit card details leak online, the other lets you know if those details are actually used.
Peace of mind
Combing through bank statements or playing detective to avoid identity theft and credit card fraud is draining. Transaction monitoring makes it easier by checking your transactions for you and only alerts you when something needs your attention.
What to do if you get an alert
Getting an alert doesn’t always mean fraud — sometimes it’s simply an unusual but legitimate purchase. Here’s how you should handle it:
Transaction monitoring vs. Dark Web Monitor Pro™
The two NordVPN features that fall under the Monitor service tier protect your finances from different angles — but they’re strongest together:
| | Transaction monitoring | Dark Web Monitor Pro™ |
|---|---|---|
What it watches | Activity in your linked bank and credit card accounts | Listings on dark web marketplaces and hacker forums |
What it detects | Suspicious transactions | Exposed credentials, phone numbers, credit card details, and national IDs |
When it alerts you | The moment unusual activity is detected on your account | When your data is found in a leak or on the dark web |
Type of protection | Financial fraud detection | Data exposure and identity monitoring |
How your financial data is protected
We understand that linking a bank account to another service requires trust. So we built transaction monitoring to be private and safe by design:
Read-only access
NordVPN can only view transaction activity to spot suspicious behavior. It can never use your data to make payments or authorize transfers.
No stored credentials
You log in through your own bank’s portal, not through NordVPN. Your username and password stay between you and your bank.
A trusted banking partner
Connections are handled by MX, an open-banking provider that specializes in secure data sharing between financial institutions and the apps people trust.
You’re always in control
You choose which accounts to link, and you can pause monitoring or disconnect an account at any time.
Advisory role only
Transaction monitoring provides alerts to help you stay aware of your account activity. It’s an awareness tool, not a financial advice one, and it doesn’t replace your bank’s own fraud protection.
