Rogue access point

(also rogue AP)

Rogue access point definition

A rogue access point is a wireless access point that was set up without the network’s administrator’s or owner’s consent. It provides unauthorized access to a network’s wired infrastructure. Rogue access points are not always set up with malicious intent — they are often installed by employees who want wireless access.

Why are rogue access points dangerous?

  • They allow unfiltered access to an enterprise’s network.
  • They interfere with the network's operations.
  • They can be used for man-in-the-middle and DDoS attacks.
