What is a URL cleaner?

A URL cleaner is a feature that removes tracking parameters attached to a URL for marketing purposes to let the company know where you’ve been. It makes tracking you online harder and makes the URL shorter and much easier to read.

How to automatically clean a URL

Turn NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro™ feature on and its URL cleaner will automatically start removing tracking parameters from links.

01

Open the NordVPN app

Launch the NordVPN app on your device and log in with your credentials.

02

Click the shield

Select the shield icon on the left-hand side.

03

Turn on web protection

Enable web protection in the Threat Protection Pro™ tab.

To use Threat Protection Pro without the URL cleaner, click “Manage” in the Threat Protection Pro™ section and switch off “URL cleaner.”

Why do clean URLs matter?

A URL cleaner provides a clear benefit – increased privacy. Unnecessary tracking reveals which site you came from, what kind of link you clicked, and even which keywords you used in a previous search. Companies use URL tracking parameters to profile you, analyze your habits, and identify your interests.

This kind of tracking also makes URLs significantly longer – they are harder to read and more dangerous to share. People don’t bother checking long links and may easily fall for an URL phishing scam.

Example of a clean URL

For unhashed URLs, finding out if they have any tracking parameters is easy — simply look for a question mark (“?”) in the address bar or the link you’re about to click. If it’s there, the URL contains one or more tracking parameters, each separated by an ampersand (“&”). However, keep in mind that some URLs might have hashed trackers even without a question mark.
