What worries me most is that despite repeated warnings about data privacy, many users continue to share sensitive information with generative AI tools. They may upload business documents, customer data, or personal details because they’re unaware of how these platforms store and handle their data.

AI automation threatens jobs across industries — manufacturing, transportation, customer service, and white-collar sectors like accounting and legal research. Machines can now handle many routine tasks that once required human workers.
The impact is already measurable. Some early research suggests generative AI may already affect entry-level employment in certain fields.
Analysis from the Stanford Digital Economy Lab reported a decline in employment among early‑career workers in the most AI‑exposed occupations. It also found that employment for workers in less affected fields and more experienced workers in the same jobs stayed stable or kept growing.2
While AI creates new positions in companies, such as those for data scientists, AI trainers, and machine learning engineers, the transition leaves many workers behind. Retraining programs often lag, and not everyone has access to the education needed to adapt to emerging fields. The burden falls hardest on younger workers entering the labor market and those in roles most vulnerable to automation.

When I sat down with my team to map out key cybersecurity risks in 2026, we identified misinformation as a growing online threat. AI now drives much of this risk by making it easy to produce convincing false content.
AI tools can output fabricated studies, quotes, and citations due to model errors or poorly framed prompts. AI hallucinations — statements generated by LLMs that sound believable but are false — spread quickly when chatbots present them confidently and people share them online without checking.
Tools that allow image, audio, and video synthesis also enable deepfakes — highly realistic but fake media of real people saying or doing things they never did. Bad actors can use them to spread political disinformation, run AI scams, or commit fraud.
The scale of the problem is striking. A recent Clutch survey found that 57% of people couldn’t identify AI-generated photos when tested.3 When misused or left unchecked, AI-generated misinformation erodes trust in legitimate sources and institutions. People become sceptical of all media — real or fake — making it harder for accurate information to cut through the noise.
Decline of human creativity
Overreliance on AI may weaken our cognitive abilities. When people offload creative or analytical tasks to AI, they lose opportunities to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
A recent study by Gerlich found a significant negative correlation between frequent use of AI tools and critical thinking abilities, mediated by cognitive offloading. The research showed that younger participants who exhibited higher dependence on AI tools scored lower in critical thinking compared to their older counterparts.4
Cognitive atrophy becomes a real risk as AI handles more of the mental work humans once did. If current trends continue, we risk raising a generation that can prompt AI effectively but struggles to think critically without it.
Environmental concerns
Training large AI models uses a lot of electricity. Emissions depend on the energy mix powering the grid, hardware efficiency, and the number of experiments teams run. When grids rely heavily on fossil fuels and teams conduct extensive testing, emissions can be high.
Most discussions on environmental impact focus on training costs, but training is only part of the problem. Day-to-day use of deployed models — answering queries for millions of users — often accounts for most ongoing energy demand. As more people adopt AI and query models continuously, total energy use rises even when individual models become more efficient.
Without sustained investment in renewable energy, better algorithms, and more efficient hardware, AI’s environmental footprint will inevitably grow as the technology scales.
Impact of AI on society and the economy
The impact of AI on society and the economy depends largely on how people deploy and govern the technology. However, AI has the potential to improve economic output and efficiency. According to the Penn Wharton Budget Model, AI will increase productivity and gross domestic product (GDP) by 1.5% by 2035, nearly 3% by 2055, and 3.7% by 2075.5
However, these gains are unlikely to be distributed evenly. Wealthier individuals and corporations will likely capture most of AI’s advantages while vulnerable populations bear the brunt of job losses and algorithmic discrimination. Without deliberate intervention, AI widens existing socioeconomic divides rather than closing them.
The challenge lies in governance. AI can drive efficiency in areas such as healthcare, finance, and research, but only if policymakers establish guardrails that distribute benefits more equitably and prevent harms from becoming entrenched.
The question is not whether AI will transform society — it already does — but whether that transformation will serve everyone or primarily those who already hold power and resources.
