How to find your IP address on an iPhone

Every device connected to the internet has an IP (Internet Protocol) address, and your iPhone is no exception. This number helps networks identify your phone online and send data to the right place. Most of the time, you won’t know it, but in certain situations, knowing how to find an IP address on an iPhone can be useful. Fortunately, iOS makes it easy to locate your iPhone’s IP address in just a few taps, and this article will show you where to find it and what the different IP addresses mean.

How to find your iPhone’s IP address manually

For most users, the easiest way to find an IP address on an iPhone is through the Wi-Fi settings menu. This method shows your local IP address, which your router assigns to your device when it connects to the network.

To check it, follow these steps:

  1. 1.Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
How to find your iPhone’s IP address manually: Step 1
  2. 2.Tap “Wi-Fi” near the top of the menu.
How to find your iPhone’s IP address manually: Step 2
  3. 3.Find the network you’re currently connected to (it will have a checkmark) and tap the information icon (“i”) next to the network name. Here you’ll find all the information related to that network, like the Wi-Fi address, password, and your public and local IP addresses.

  4. 4.Scroll down to the “IP address” section. Your IP address will appear there (for example, 192.168.1.13).

This number identifies your phone within your internal network. It will only remain the same as long as you’re on the same Wi-Fi network connection. If you connect to a different network — for example, at a café or office — your IP address will usually change.

How to check an iPhone’s IP address without Wi-Fi

The steps above show the private IP address your router assigns to your iPhone when you connect to a Wi-Fi network. Once you disconnect from Wi-Fi, that address disappears because your phone is no longer part of that local network.

However, your iPhone still needs an IP address to access the internet. When you use a cellular connection, your mobile carrier assigns your device a public IP address so it can communicate with websites and online services.

Unlike internal IP addresses on a home network, cellular IPs usually come from a shared pool of addresses managed by the carrier. Because of this setup, the IP your phone uses on mobile data can change frequently — sometimes even between connections or while your session is still active.

Another important difference is that you won’t see this IP address directly in the iPhone’s settings. Instead, you’ll need to check it through a browser using an IP lookup tool, which shows the public IP address currently associated with your connection.

You won’t be able to find this IP address in your iPhone’s settings. Instead, follow these steps:

  1. 1.Open Safari or another browser on your iPhone.

  2. 2.Go to an IP lookup tool you prefer or simply type in “What is my IP?” into the search bar.

  3. 3.The page will automatically display your public IP address, and may also show additional details such as your internet service provider and the virtual location associated with that IP.

How to find your router’s IP address on iPhone

Sometimes you may need your router’s IP address instead of your device’s IP. Entering this address into a browser lets you access and manage router settings such as network security, connected devices, and parental controls.

You can find it in the same iPhone’s Wi-Fi settings:

  1. 1.Open the Settings app.

  2. 2.Tap “Wi-Fi.”

  3. 3.Tap the “i” icon next to your connected network.

  4. 4.Look for the “Router” field. The number shown there is your router’s IP address. Most home routers use addresses such as “192.168.1.1” or something similar.

Private vs. public IP addresses

As you may have noticed by now, your iPhone actually uses two types of IP addresses.

A private IP address, or your local IP address, identifies your device within your internal network, such as your home Wi-Fi. Your router assigns this address to each device connected to the network so they can communicate with each other.

A public IP address, the same one your router uses, identifies your network on the internet. It’s the address websites and online services see when devices on your network connect to them. In most homes, all devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network share the same external IP address.

The public IP address works thanks to a networking process called network address translation (NAT). NAT allows a router to translate traffic from multiple private IP addresses inside the network into a single external IP address when communicating with the internet. In simple terms, it lets many devices in your home connect online while appearing as one device to the outside world.

When would you need to find your iPhone’s IP address?

Most people do not have to know their IP address. However, in several situations, knowing how to find an IP address on an iPhone becomes useful:

  • Troubleshooting network issues. If your iPhone can’t connect to a network or apps refuse to load, checking your IP address helps identify potential conflicts or router problems.
  • Configuring router permissions. Some routers allow administrators to create rules for specific devices. To do so, you may need your device’s local IP address.
  • Setting up smart home devices. Smart home systems sometimes require manual configuration. In these cases, identifying your phone’s IP address helps devices communicate correctly.
  • Verifying VPN connections. When you connect to a VPN, your public IP address should change. Verifying your IP confirms whether the connection works properly.
  • Network administration. Advanced users managing networks or testing connectivity often check IP addresses to diagnose configuration problems.

Can you configure an IP address manually?

Even though your iPhone receives an IP address automatically in most cases, iOS also allows you to configure one manually. This option usually appears in network settings when you connect to Wi-Fi.

Manual IP configuration is mostly useful for advanced setups — for example, when a network requires a static IP address, when you’re troubleshooting connectivity issues, or when a network administrator asks you to assign specific values.

Keep in mind that this process only applies to Wi-Fi connections. When you use a cellular connection, your mobile carrier automatically allocates your IP address, and you can’t manually configure it on the device.

If you want to change the IP address on an iPhone that a Wi-Fi network will use internally, follow these steps:

  1. 1.On your iPhone’s home screen, tap “Settings.”

  2. 2.Go to “Wi-Fi” and find the Wi-Fi network you want to configure (either the one you’re connected to or one saved on your device).

  3. 3.Tap the “i” icon next to the network name.

  4. 4.Scroll down and click “Configure IP” under the “IPv4 address” section.

  5. 5.Click “Manual.”

  6. 6.Enter the IP address you want, subnet mask (for example, “255.255.0.0”), your router’s (gateway) address, and tap “Save.”

After saving, your iPhone will use the IP address you entered whenever it connects to that specific Wi-Fi connection. Make sure the IP address you choose isn’t already set to another device on the network.

Why does your iPhone’s IP address show a different location?

Many users feel confused when an IP address lookup shows the wrong city or region. This situation doesn’t happen often and usually doesn’t mean anything wrong, but several factors can explain it:

  • IP geolocation databases are not perfectly accurate. IP location tools rely on databases that map IP addresses to geographic locations. These databases often estimate locations based on internet infrastructure rather than precise device positions. Because of it, your IP may show a nearby city or region.
  • VPN connections change the virtual location. If you use a VPN, websites see the VPN server’s IP address instead of your real one. This way, your virtual location may change in the process, too.
  • Cellular networks route traffic differently. Mobile providers often route traffic through regional gateways or data centers. As a result, your IP address may appear closer to the carrier’s infrastructure instead of your exact location.
  • ISP headquarters may appear in the results. Some geolocation services display the location of an internet service provider’s headquarters rather than the user’s actual location.
