Overview

Crossrider is an adware and browser hijacker family that targets web browsers. It typically gets into the computer systems through bundled software or fake extensions. Crossrider acts as an unwanted extension displaying intrusive advertisements or redirecting users to malicious websites. Over the years, Crossrider’s functionality has expanded, enhancing it to a tool capable of deploying more dangerous payloads, including spyware and other forms of malware. Once installed, it can monitor browsing activity and inject ads into web pages.

Crossrider’s modularity allows it to evolve and adapt its behavior based on the malicious goals of its creators. While it is most often used to display ads, it can also be used to distribute other malware, such as ransomware, keyloggers, and remote access Trojans.

Possible symptoms

Crossrider tries to avoid detection, but you may notice some unusual symptoms, such as slower system performance. If your device becomes slower than usual or crashes frequently, running a system scan is a good idea.

Other signs to watch out for:

  • Unexpected pop-up ads or redirects while browsing.
  • Slower web browsing performance.
  • Unwanted browser extensions or toolbars that you didn’t consent to.
  • Changes in browser settings, such as the homepage or search engine.
  • Unusual network activity or system behavior.

Sources of the infection

Crossrider may infiltrate the device through:

  • Bundled software.
  • Fake software updates.
  • Malicious advertisements.
  • Trojanized software.

Protection

The best way to protect yourself from Crossrider, or any malware for that matter, is to use common sense and stay alert for anything suspicious online. Follow general cybersecurity practices to stay one step ahead of the cyber threats:

  • Do not click on suspicious links or attachments in emails, especially if they come from unknown senders.
  • Keep your software updated to ensure you have the latest security patches.
  • Download software only from official sources, like the app store or developer’s website.
  • Use a firewall to monitor and control incoming and outgoing network traffic.
  • Use security software like NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro™ to block malicious websites and harmful ads.

Crossrider removal

Crossrider is designed to avoid detection, so removing this trojan may be challenging. While your best bet would be to perform a complete system wipe, you can also use antivirus software to remove Crossrider from your Windows device:

  • Remove suspicious browser extensions.
  • Perform a full system scan with trusted and updated antivirus software.
  • Clear browser cache and cookies.
  • Manually inspect running processes in the Task Manager for any unfamiliar or suspicious activity and end them. Check Startup tab and remove any suspicious programs.
  • Reset your browser settings, restart your computer and run another full scan to make sure no traces are left.
  • After removal, change all your passwords because they may have been compromised.
