VoiP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a method for communication over the internet. VoIP can be used for all forms of communication like phone, fax, SMS, voice mail, etc. The protocol works by converting the textual or audio messages and signals into digital packets and signals and then relaying them over the internet. Long distance communication, whether traditional voice communication or video communication, has become exceedingly simple and cost effective since VoIP came into existence. However, services implementing VoIP, like Skype, are blocked in some regions of the world due to competition between different service providers or censorship laws.
Many telecommunication providers, which also provide internet services, see VoiP service as loss of revenue. Some countries might have one telecommunications provider, hence VoiP service might not be available entirely. Official reasons given for blocking VoiP service are often “high bandwidth usage“. A few countries that block VoiP service nationwide, have politically driven agenda, that has more to do with controlling mass communication.
