Warning alert Although technically you can use the L2TP/PPTP protocol, it has serious security flaws. Whenever possible, we recommend choosing OpenVPN or IKEv2/IPSec instead.


This is a tutorial on how to connect a Draytek router via L2TP/IPsec.

First things first, these changes are made in the web configuration panel of your router. You can access it by visiting the local IP of your router from your web browser. The two most common, default local IPs that most routers have are or – you can access these by opening or in your browser. The default IP, username and password are listed in your router’s User Manual.

1. Open the VPN and Remote Access menu;
2. Go to Lan to Lan submenu;
3. In order to create a new VPN profile. click on an empty entry;
4. Change these settings in 1. Common Settings menu:
Profile Name can be set to anything you like. I would recommend naming it as NordVPN;
Enable this profile option should be enabled;
• Change Call direction to Dial-out;
• Enable Always on feature;
• Enable PING to keep IPsec tunnel alive feature and put in our servers address: Our server list can be found here: ( for example);
5. Change these settings in 2. Dial-out Settings menu:
• Select L2TP with IPsec Policy as a Type of Server I am calling and select Must (if you run into any issues – change this to Nice to have);
• Into Server IP/Host Name for VPN field enter the address the server you want to connect to. Our server list can be found here: ;
• Enter your NordVPN Username and Password into corresponding fields;
• Set PPP Authentication to PAP/CHAP/MS-CHAP/MS-CHAPv2;
• Set VJ Compression to On;
• Select Pre-Shared Key under IKE Authentication Method. The key is: nordvpn

6. Change these settings in 4. TCP/IP Network Settings menu:
• Set RIP Direction to Disabled;
 “From first subnet to remote network, you have to do” should be changed to NAT;
• Enable Change default route to this VPN;

7. Click OK to finish the VPN setup.
8. Go to VPN and Remote Access -> Connection Management;
9. Click Dial to establish VPN.

Congratulations, your traffic should be going through NordVPN now! You can visit to confirm the successful VPN connection.
