Ciao, football fans! Each season of the Italian Serie A brings beautiful and intense matches, this season being no exception. With the 20 best Italian teams competing for the title, Serie A is on the radar of football aficionados worldwide.

Serie A is the top football league in Italy, counting more than 80 years of operation with the first season dated back in 1929–1930. While Spanish La Liga is known for it’s technical flair and Premier League is often associated with high intensity, the Serie A is the greatest example of top-notch tactical play on a football field, featuring the most intelligent players and the most storied clubs. Just think of the names, such as Juventus, Inter, AC Milan and Roma – they itself bring a promise of incredible matches.

Turin Juventus were the ones to celebrate winning the Campione d’Italia title more times than any other team in Serie A. Milan and Inter are the runners-up. Which team will demonstrate its’ superiority this season? Don’t miss a match of Serie A – you can watch it on BT Sport (UK), fuboTV (U.S.) and slingTV (U.S.). Away from the country? Get NordVPN and stream sports from anywhere on Earth – well, except Antarctica.

Tournament. The Serie A league is an all-to-all type of tournament. The first half of the season is called the andata and comprises of 19 games, where every team plays against each other. In the second half of the season, or ritorno, the remaining 19 games take place, only this time the home and away situations are switched.

Champions. Winning the Serie A Championship title means winning the Scudetto. Scudetto, or a “small shield” in English, is a patch that looks like a shield in colors of the Italian flag. The champions’ team gets the honour to wear the decoration the following season, this way showing off their achievement.

Goals. The leading goalscorer of the Serie A season gets the award of the Italian Golden Boot – the Capocannoniere. Before the 2015-2016 season, the top goalscorer of all times was Gino Rossetti, who scored 36 goals for the Torino team in season 1928-1929. 87 years later, the record was repeated by Gonzalo Higuaín for Napoli. Another exceptional player in terms of scoring goals was Gunnar Nordahl. He didn’t score as many goals as Rossetti and Higuaín did per season, but was the leading scorer in 5 outstanding seasons in 1950s, which brought him the pluricapocannoniere title.

Nicknames. Juve is not the only nickname for F.C. Juventus, the most successful club in the Serie A league’s history. Referencing to the club colors, the Juventus team is often called i bianconeri (“the black-and-white ones”) or le zebre, meaning “the zebras”. Have you ever noticed the Juventus being called la Vecchia Signora and wondered why? La Vecchia Signora means “The Old lady” and is the most popular nickname of the club. Juventus is a Latin name for “youth”, but since the club is one of the oldest in Italy, the irony plays the role here. There are debates regarding the origins of the nickname, but the common explanation for the “lady” part is a wish of the Agnelli family (they bought the club in 1920s) to evoke a chic and sophisticated style – just like the one of an old noblewoman.
