Brilliant players, top-notch game, drama in the field and hardly predictable results make the Premier League a real jewel in the world of football. No wonder why the Premier League is the most watched football league in the world!
From August through May, 20 clubs from England and Wales compete for the honor of holding the Premier League Champions title. It seems that the dominance of the “Big Four” clubs – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United – is in the past. With Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City stepping into Top 4 positions in the previous seasons, and the Leicester City becoming the Champion for the first time in 2016, the Premier League have just got all things nicely spiced up.
As the season is slowly coming to an end, the things are getting hotter in the standings table. It doesn’t matter whether you say “football” or “soccer”, Premier League matches are what everyone should be able to enjoy. You can watch the Premier League live on BT Sports (UK), NBC Sports (United States) and TSN (Canada). Away from the country? When the Premier League started back then in 1992, who would have thought that it will become the-most watched sports league in the world?
Clubs. Since the very beginning, the Premier league has complied with the 20-team standard. During the lifetime of the Premier League, 47 clubs have competed in total, but only 6 of them have become the Champions: Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City. The absolute record-breaker is the Manchester United, demonstrating its’ superiority against the other teams for 13 times.
Derbies. It’s those games that make fans’ hearts beat faster. When teams of the same city meet in the football field, it’s a “do or die” match. The biggest derbies of this season take place in Manchester (Manchester United vs. Manchester City), Merseyside (Liverpool vs. Everton) and North London (Arsenal vs. Tottenham).
“The Big Four”. Mid-2000s was an interesting era in the Premier League. During that time, four clubs, so-called the “Big Four”, were dominating the top positions season after season: Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. Their excellence in the football field was hard to beat. Bringing the show of true football mastery to the spectators, it diminished competitiveness of the whole league at the same time. The distinction between the “Big Four” and the remaining 16 teams was too significant and many fans would have called the league rather boring at that time. Gladly, the positive shift was made by the Tottenham Hotspur, managing to break the “Big Four” in the 2009-2010 season, and later – Manchester City, being the first team outside the “Big Four” to win the Champion’s title in the 2011-2012 season.
Rewards. In addition to the Premier League’s trophy, the Champion team also gets the lucky ticket to the UEFA Champions League. The second and the third teams also go directly to the Champions League, while the fourth one has to play successfully in a play-off round in order to enter the most prestigious football league in Europe.
