Sports bars filled with basketball enthusiasts, anxious people on the streets checking their phones for scores, employees secretly peeking at online streams of the games – yep, these are the classic signs of the March Madness. Let the madness begin!

The beginning of spring has a whole different meaning in the US. The season kickstarts with the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, better known as March Madness. A total of 68 college basketball teams rise up to compete for the champions title. But before the shining moment of glory of the Final Championships occurs, there’s almost a whole month of top-notch college basketball to be enjoyed.

Many sports fans consider March Madness as one of the best basketball events out there. That isn’t surprising. March Madness has it all: intense rivalry, jaw-dropping athleticism, a short but condensed tournament format that drags you in and won’t let go until the very last game. Since it’s a single-elimination tournament, every team in the field of 68 is ready to show their best to win. So are you all set for the basketball madness? In case you’re away from the country, don’t miss the action – watch the games online. Get NordVPN and stream sports from anywhere on Earth – well, except Antarctica.

A few chunks of the March Madness history:
  • The March Madness tournament began in 1939. We have to be thankful to Harold Olsen, a coach of the Ohio State University, as it was his idea to organize a national tournament of college basketball teams.
  • Only 8 teams played the first NCAA men’s basketball tournament, as compared to the 68 we see competing today.
  • Oregon was the first one to win the champions’ title. A great portion of their luck in beating other 7 teams was the height of its starting frontcourt. The team was even nicknamed the “Tall First.”
  • The University of California has won the most titles so far – 11 times in total. Kentucky follows it with 8 titles and North Carolina with 6 titles.
  • Cutting down the nets is a March Madness ritual. At the end of both regional and national championship games, each of the players of the winning team cuts a single strand off of both nets. Starting with seniors and moving down by classes, everyone makes their cuts until the final one. The coach cuts off the last strand that connects the net to the hoop.
  • The final note of the tournament is “One Shining Moment” – the song played while the champions are cutting the nets. It was written by David Barrett and is dedicated specifically to March Madness.
  • In 2017, North Carolina Tar Heels became the champions after winning the final game against Gonzaga Bulldogs with the score 71:65. Whom will we see hoisting the NCAA National Championship trophy in 2018?
