LOC record

LOC record definition

A LOC record is an informational DNS record that specifies the geographical location of a domain. It provides metadata about domains and hosts, such as latitude, longitude, and altitude. LOC records allow DNS administrators to associate physical locations with domain names, making them useful for specific applications like geolocation services.

LOC record benefits

LOC records provide a way to include location-specific data, helping boost geolocation accuracy for applications. This type of data provides transparency about where the domain’s server is located but also can help comply with privacy regulations. However, they are rarely used due to the limited need for such detailed geographical information in most DNS use cases.

Other types of DNS records:

DNS records such as LOC provide different types of information and help the DNS service function. In addition, to LOC, other DNS records include:

  • RP record: Another informational DNS record that provides contact information for the responsible person managing a domain.
  • CERT record: A security-focused DNS record used to store certificates or public keys for authentication purposes, such as TLS or S/MIME.
  • NSEC record: A security DNS record used in DNSSEC to prove the nonexistence of specific DNS records, adding cryptographic security to DNS queries. DNSSEC includes related records like DS, NSEC3, and RRSIG, all of which ensure secure DNS resolution.
