Personal VPN

Personal VPN

(also virtual private network, consumer VPN, commercial VPN)

Personal VPN definition

Personal VPN is a VPN connection or service intended for non-commercial or individual use. By using it, a person connects to a remote server, hides their real IP and virtual location, and encrypts their internet traffic. This allows them to browse the internet securely and privately.

Benefits of personal VPN

  • Online safety. You can appear to be browsing from a location of your choosing with a different IP while your virtual location and IP stay hidden.
  • Preventing traffic-based bandwidth throttling. ISPs can sometimes slow internet speeds to some users who are streaming or gaming. Avoid traffic-based speed discrimination by using a VPN.
  • Secure connection for remote work. Don't send sensitive work data over unsecured networks — stay safe with the encryption a VPN offers.
  • Access content while away. Connect to a server back home while you're away and access your content securely.

Limitations of personal VPN

  • Lower internet speed. The VPN's encryption process slows down your internet connection. It is not the same for all providers, however. Some VPNs have vast server networks and modern protocols, so the impact on your speed is minimal.
