Antivirus definition

Antivirus is cybersecurity software designed to prevent, detect, and remove viruses from computers. Antiviruses monitor programs for unusual behavior, check new files against known malware databases, and quarantine threats before they can cause damage.

Real antivirus examples

1971: The Reaper was developed by Ray Tomlinson to combat The Creeper virus. It is widely cited as the first antivirus software ever written.

1987: Bernd Robert Fix wrote the program to delete the Vienna virus. It is the first documented case of virus removal by dedicated antivirus software.
