With Adyen partnership, NordVPN moves to fully self-hosted payment processing

Back when we started NordVPN, our service wasn’t very different from everything else in the industry. We built a product that was mostly used by tech-savvy people to protect their privacy and bypass global censorship. We cherished (and still do!) the idea of an open, secure and free Internet. However, we had no idea that various political decisions and data leaks would soon rock the world of online security and privacy.

Soon after these events, we came to realize that private VPNs shouldn’t be labeled as niche products. A simple and easy-to-use VPN with high quality standards should be a necessity rather than a privilege – and providing such a mainstream service is the only way to make a significant impact.

Building a service ‘for all’ became our objective. We understood that not everyone would be pleased with every move we made and that some mistakes were likely to happen. However, we always chose to focus on long-term goals rather than immediate profit.

Following this vision, we have decided to discontinue our long-term cooperation with PayPal. NordVPN has been growing rapidly and has reached the point where using a self-hosted payment processing solution will bring extra benefits and reduce security risks. From now on, instead of directing customers to PayPal, we will provide a seamless purchase experience by managing all customer data and recurring subscriptions ourselves.

On the same note, we are happy to announce our partnership with one of the most popular payment providers in the world – Adyen. Unlike PayPal, Adyen provides a self-hosted payment system.

The versatility that Adyen offers and its experience with markets all over the world will help us become even more flexible and better at pursuing our goals. Soon we will introduce number of new region-specific local payment options, which will make NordVPN more accessible to internet users worldwide.
