Odd parity

Odd parity definition

Odd parity refers to an error detection method where an extra bit, or a parity bit, is added to each data unit. In an odd parity, the total value of the 1s in a data unit is always an odd number.

Benefits of odd parity checking

  • Simplicity. Odd parity checks are simple and don't use much computation.
  • Low costs. Odd parity checks are inexpensive because they only need a small bit added to each data unit.
  • Accuracy. Odd parity checks verify transmission accuracy.
  • Improved security. Odd parity checks provide an additional security layer and help prevent cyberattacks.
  • Enhancements. Advanced error detection methods like a cyclic redundancy check and forward error correction can improve parity checks.

Drawbacks of an odd parity check

  • Limited error detection. Odd parity checks are limited in detecting only the code errors that affect the parity number.
  • Limited detection. Odd parity checks can determine inconsistencies but cannot show where they are.
  • False errors. Odd parity checks can sometimes end up showing a false result.
  • Security can be bypassed. Odd parity checks are not hard to bypass.
