NordVPN for Windows: release notes

This is the place for the historical record of improvements and tweaks in the NordVPN app for Windows. Updating the app lets you enjoy the freshest online and privacy experience with NordVPN, and this makes us happy. That’s a win-win.

NordVPN 6.31 (latest)

What's new:

  • success
Spotted a bug? Report it to us by using a form within the app, and we’ll bring our bug spray.
  • success
Seamless protection with auto-connect: if you enable it on unsecured Wi-Fi networks, NordVPN will connect automatically when you join one and stay connected as long as you’re on it – unless you disable auto-connect or trust this Wi-Fi network.
  • success
Bye Favorites: As servers in Favorites and Recents often overlap, we’re eliminating the Favorites section from the app but doubling the items shown in Recents to 10 instead. Your current favorite servers will now move to Recents. If you’d like to save a list of your current favorite servers, we added an easy way to do it.
  • success
A few tweaks to make your NordVPN experience better, including the one that adds extra precision to Quick Connect when picking the best server for you.

NordVPN 6.30

6.30 might be something you’re not happy to see on your phone’s screen when the alarm goes on Monday morning. Our version of 6.30 is a totally different thing. Here’s what’s new and exciting about it:

  • success
Enable auto-connect on all Wi-Fi networks to enjoy effortless security. You can trust specific Wi-Fi networks if you don’t need VPN protection on them.
  • success
Showing more detailed ‘Recents’: if you were connected to a specialty server, we’ll display both its category and country.
  • success
    Improved stability and performance.
  • success
Smoother app experience after getting rid of bugs of various species. Those include the mysterious one with disappearing ‘Recents’ after a VPN protocol change or connection pause, the rare one where NordVPN and drivers of certain headphones just couldn’t go along, and a few others.
  • success
A few performance fixes, as we did some tinkering under the hood to make the app run smoother.

NordVPN 6.29

An ultimate focus, a confident smile. Click – and the release is out. For us, it’s one of the most exciting app releases ever. The project we’ve been relentlessly working on comes into light today. We call it NordLynx.

NordLynx is our new technology built around the WireGuard® protocol to bring you blazing speeds in VPN connections. Fast, secure, and optimized for privacy, NordLynx is set to be a game-changer in your VPN experience.

Here’s how to take it for a test-drive: Go to Settings > Auto-connect > Disable “Choose a VPN protocol and server automatically” > VPN protocol > NordLynx

Even though this release is all about speeding up your VPN connections, we’ve also made a few other improvements:

  • success
Faster and more smooth switching between servers.
  • success
Fixed: The App Killswitch now activates only when disconnecting from VPN manually or if an unexpected connection drop happens. It means no more quitting the selected applications when switching to another VPN server.

NordVPN 6.28

What’s new:

  • success
Trusted Wi-Fi networks: add Wi-Fi networks on which you don’t want to be auto-connected to VPN.
  • success
Search is now better at searching: we revamped our search mechanism so you get only relevant results – and fast.
  • success
More accuracy in Recents: if you used Quick Connect, we’ll say so – instead of listing the specific server you were connected to.
  • success
A few tweaks that will make your app experience smoother.

NordVPN 6.27

What’s new:

  • success
Pause VPN protection for 5 minutes, 15 minutes, or 1 hour and get connected again automatically. It’s like hitting “snooze” – only instead of a few more moments of precious sleep, you temporarily disable the VPN connection.
  • success
We’ve revamped Settings to make them more handy. Key highlights: the Kill Switch has been moved to a separate tab, and there’s a new toggle that will assign a VPN protocol and server automatically.

What’s fixed:

  • success
A few security patches are in place.
  • success
Minor improvements and fixes to keep your app experience smooth.

NordVPN 6.26

What’s new:

  • success
We changed how the app icon in tray indicates your VPN connection status. A solid icon means that you’re connected to VPN; an outline one – disconnected.
  • success
Fewer logos, more loading: new loading screen animation is here.

What’s fixed:

  • success
Some users would launch the app and notice that the server list missing. Uh-oh. We made sure that the servers always stay exactly where you left them.
  • success
Sometimes, a sneaky bug was stopping the Kill Switch from working properly. Now the bug is gone, and the Kill Switch is back in order.

NordVPN 6.25

OUT: bugs of various species. We sent them to an unknown destination with a one-way ticket.

IN: improvements under the hood to make the app run more smoothly.

It’s all about balance.

NordVPN 6.24

What’s new:

  • success
We tweaked our server selection algorithm, which is responsible for connecting you to the server delivering a secure VPN connection at the best speed.
  • success
The app’s minimalist title bar has more of the Windows vibe now. There’s a ‘Back’ button so you can navigate the settings back and forth the way you’re used to. Also, you’ll now see the NordVPN app title – wow, we know.
  • success
You asked, we listened. We’ve received feedback that a server name in the dropdown menu gets hard to read once you hover on it. Indeed, white text on a gray background is not that cool. So now it’s in black. Our eyes are grateful.
  • success
A bunch of under-the-hood fixes for better app performance.

NordVPN 6.23

What’s new:

  • success
Introducing smart security on Wi-Fi! If you join an unsecured Wi-Fi network, the app will connect to VPN automatically. This way, you can enjoy ultimate security online with zero effort. Simply go to the Auto Connect settings, flip a switch, and forget about it.
  • success
Now you can give us instant feedback about your connection speeds. Was it like driving an F1 racer? Or rather a slow and bumpy ride? We want to know. Your feedback will help us improve!

NordVPN 6.22

In this release, we did some minor tinkering under the hood and unleashed a couple of changes into the wild:

  • success
New: Now you can select a specific city for VPN to auto-connect. New York or San Francisco, Perth or Sydney, Frankfurt or Berlin. If you’re going for the best connection speeds, the distance matters. Pick the city that is closest to you.
  • success
New: We made it easier to access Advanced Settings. Now they appear as a separate section in the Menu.

NordVPN 6.21

We’re getting straight to the point this time. The key 3 things we’re serving with this release:

  • success
    Introducing in-app payments
  • success
Search is now better at searching
  • success
A few minor bugs have been sent away

NordVPN 6.20

S6 E20: The one with the recent connections.

Plot summary:

  • success
Connect to NordVPN, then look at the sidebar. Your recent connections will appear there, so you can switch back in a blink. Also, the recent connections will be accessible from the jump list.
  • success
Under-the-hood improvements for app reliability to ensure stable VPN connection under adverse network conditions.
  • success
The app is less memory-hungry now thanks to optimized RAM usage.
  • success
After little fine-tuning, search results now include servers by city.

To be continued.
