Private internet access

(also PIA)

Private internet access definition

Private internet access (PIA) is the ability to connect to the internet with more privacy and security by using various means (like virtual private network (VPN) services). Compared to connecting to the internet through ISP directly, private internet access hides most of the details about the user’s online behavior by encrypting their traffic and routing it through a remote server.

Key aspects of private internet access

  • Privacy: Private internet access tools seek to limit the information that third parties can learn about the user — for example, VPNs encrypt your online traffic to shield your online activity from anyone monitoring your connection.
  • IP masking: Many private internet access tools protect the user’s virtual location by showing a different IP address to the websites they visit.
  • Censorship avoidance: Private internet access is essential for avoiding censorship or internet restrictions in repressive regimes.

Benefits of private internet access

  • Enhanced security. Using a VPN to connect to the internet, encrypts the user’s traffic, making it virtually impossible for a third party to access the user’s data.
  • Increased privacy. The user’s internet service provider (ISP) as well as other third parties can’t track the user’s browsing history, preventing them from using it for profit or surveillance.

Drawbacks of private internet access

  • Technical complexity. While a VPN can be easy to use, other private internet access tools are much more complex.
  • False sense of security. Using additional tools can add an extra layer of security and privacy, but a lot depends on the actions of the user.
  • Cost. Private internet access tools and services often cost money.
  • Limited access. Some websites and services recognize private internet access tools and may block or limit the user’s access.
  • Slower internet speed. Some tools such as Tor can take a long time to load pages, making the browsing experience worse.

Is PIA the same as a VPN?

No — a VPN is one of several tools that can be used for private internet access. While VPNs are generally preferable for their ease of use, encryption, and (for reputable providers) additional features, you can also achieve some form of private internet access by using proxy servers, the Tor browser, or other means.
