NordVPN at RightsCon’25: How we support the fight for digital security and online freedom

The internet connects us all, but it’s not always a safe or fair place. Because of rising threats of cyberattacks and online surveillance, the fight for human rights now includes the digital space, too. That’s why events like RightsCon, the world’s leading summit on human rights in the digital space, matter so much. And NordVPN is proud to contribute. On February 24-27, our team participated in this year’s event in Taipei, alongside those working to protect online freedom around the world, and shared our cybersecurity knowledge.

Sharing our cybersecurity expertise at RightsCon’25

About the event

RightsCon is a global event that brings together business leaders, policymakers, tech experts, and human rights advocates to tackle some of the biggest issues related to human rights and technology.

Over the years, this global event has grown into a powerful platform where experts share ideas, teach practical skills, and build solutions to make the digital world safer and fairer for everyone. The event includes different sessions that encourage discussion on the topic, including fireside chats, workshops, and strategic roundtables. NordVPN is proud to have been a part of this journey since 2019.

Over the years, RightsCon has traveled through major cities worldwide, including San José, Tunis, Toronto, Brussels, Rio de Janeiro, Manila, and San Francisco. In 2025, it landed in Taipei, Taiwan, a region known for its dedication to internet freedom and human rights.

Cyber resilience and education in a time of rising threats

One of the main areas of focus at this year’s RightsCon is cyber resilience — something that’s becoming more important as cyber threats grow. Rather than only focusing on protection, the focus has shifted to the ability to withstand, adapt to, and recover from attacks. To contribute to this conversation, our Chief Technology Officer, Marijus Briedis, took the stage to talk about how we can better prepare for these challenges.

"Cybersecurity is an ongoing journey," said Marijus. Simply protecting against threats isn’t going to cut it — we need to be able to recover and adapt when cyberattacks happen.

Cyber resilience requires public education on topics like secure passwords, phishing, and how to spot misinformation. It also means ongoing training for businesses, governments, and individuals to close the gap in cyber skills. We need collaboration between the public and private sectors to share threat intelligence and be able to respond quickly.

Building cyber resilience is everyone’s responsibility. Even simple actions like using strong passwords and being cautious online can make all the difference. By working together and investing in education, we can help create a safer digital world for everyone.

Ensuring digital security for activists and NGOs

Activists and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) do important work, but many lack the necessary tools or resources to protect themselves online. We want to better understand the challenges these groups face and offer the right tools and advice. For this reason, Laura Tyrylytė, Head of PR at Nord Security, joined cybersecurity experts at RightsCon to lead a hands-on workshop on practical digital security.

In the session, we introduced essential cybersecurity tools and techniques that help protect sensitive documents, secure communications, and boost overall digital safety. These tools are especially important for smaller organizations and individual activists who often lack the resources and expertise. In a time when activists and NGOs are often targeted online, cybersecurity is a lifeline and this kind of practical training helps protect free speech, privacy, and human rights.

“Cybersecurity is an unavoidable part of digital human rights,” said Laura. “We can’t discuss issues like encryption, online surveillance, or digital threats without recognizing the real risks they pose to people as well as national security.”

What does it mean for us?

Digital security isn’t just about technology — it’s a shared responsibility. NGOs, tech companies, and governments all play a part in building stronger cyber resilience. Events like RightsCon provide the much-needed space for an open and constructive dialogue. They invite experts from all fields to seek solutions and together shape a safer future for all. By sharing our knowledge, we hope to contribute to this conversation and help everyone handle today’s challenges online.
